Diana Copperwhite
Notes on Lightness, Notes on Darkness
/
As part of the exhibition Onomatopoeia, this selection highlights small-scale paintings from Diana Copperwhite's ongoing series Notes on Lightness, Notes on Darkness. Featuring faceless "anti-portraits", painted with colour bands across their faces, the works both reflect the dematerialisation of individual identity in an increasingly technological world and emphasize the persistence of human presence.

The colour bars within the paintings often reference logos and musical chords, and create links and punctuations between different works. In addition, they become a type of branding, with subjects becoming buried beneath logos, an abstraction in relation to figuration, with people both appearing and disappearing.
