This catalogue was published to coincide with the artist's solo exhibition Paintings of the Nineties,15 May - 21 June 1998.
Bernard Cohen has described himself as "A storyteller and a creator of pictorial theatre". His tensely wrought and unpredictably complex pictures hold a unique position within the canon of contemporary art. Born in London in 1933, he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1951-1954. In 1988 he was appointed as Slade Professor and Director of the Slade School of Fine Art, University College, London.
This catalogue features an essay by Dr. David Alan Mellor titled The Migrating Eye, in which he writes:
"Bernard Cohen's paintings of the nineties spin, weave and tensely map the chaos of the world. They have the aspect of chronoscapes; that is to say, they evoke and incorporate times, beings and places in process of passage."
