This catalogue was published to coincide with the artist's solo exhibition Extreme Makeover, May 9 - June 14 2008 at Flowers Gallery, New York.
Derek Boshier first came to prominence with his paintings as a student at the Royal College of Art in London in the early 1960s, where he studied with David Hockney, Allen Jones, R.B.Kitaj and others in the British Pop Art movement.
Subsequently he has worked in many other media: drawing, printmaking, film, books, three-dimensional object making, installations, photography, and in graphics, working with popular music groups such as The Clash and with David Bowie.
The thirty-seven works produced between 2003 and 2006 brought together for Extreme Makeover are created from collaged material subtracted from glossy magazines, including Vogue and Paris Match, layered with images, marks, and text in Indian ink. The exhibition charted Boshier's return to a single technique of photographic modification with which he experimented in the later 1960s.
