John Loker Wipeout 5, 2001

John Loker’s Australia-inspired monotypes from the series Wipeout were executed with master printmaker Kip Gresham. They see the artist return to a simpler way of making prints after a period of experimenting with complex screenprinted layers. Loker reveals that he used an old mangle: “I made a piece of wood thick enough to go through it and then I got blankets like you use for an etching press and printing inks. Then I just worked on sheets of Perspex. I was drawing on the Perspex and pulling it through and using templates by cutting shapes out of card.” Wipeout 5 is inspired by the arc of windshield wiper, as Loker experienced in Australia during a desert whirlwind.
