Edward Burtynsky In the Wake of Progress
Luminato Festival Toronto 2021 will unveil In the Wake of Progress – a fully choreographed blend of photographs and film, including new and never-before-seen works, by Edward Burtynsky. Created for 21 of the screens surrounding Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas Square, and filmed by Bokeh Collective for the 2021 Festival’s online audience, this new 22-minute piece tells the epic tale of humanity's impact on the planet through photographs and film from Burtynsky’s 40-year career.
Co-produced by Canadian music legend Bob Ezrin, featuring an original soundtrack by Phil Strong with vocals by award-winning Cree Métis artist iskwē and performances by musicians of The Glenn Gould School at The Royal Conservatory of Music, In the Wake of Progress is an urgent call to action, and a quest for hope, as we face the greatest existential threat of our time: the climate crisis.
Following its virtual premiere with Luminato Festival in October, In the Wake of Progress will begin an international tour in Spring 2022. As a touring production and fully immersive experience, the visceral impact of this new work can be shared with millions of people at festivals and venues around the world, both indoors and outdoors.
