Bernard Cohen 80th Birthday Exhibition featured on Blouin Art Info
"The show, which opens tomorrow, May 22, 2013, contains examples of the artist's distinctive and unpredictable "complex colour field" paintings which the gallery's managing director Matthew Flowers said has influenced everyone from Brice Marden to Chris Ofili.
Flowers told BLOUIN ARTINFO UK: "We've selected the works to give an overview of his career, it's a sample, with pieces stretching back to the 1960s. Without a doubt, Bernard is one of the most significant painters to have worked in Britain over the last six decades. There are so many examples of people who have looked to his work for inspiration."
Highlights from the show include 10 canvases from the 1960s, when Cohen's painting practice, according to the artist, went through a "campaign of exploration and invention…challenging his own assumptions about what a painting could be and do."
The gallery has represented the artist since the late 1990s. Cohen has 10 works in the Tate' s permanent collection."
