Edward Burtynsky donation to Vancouver Art Gallery
Canadian artist Edward Burtynsky has donated 34 photographs to the Vancouver Art Gallery, bringing the institution's total number of works by the artist to 44. The collection comprises three decades of the photographer's work, taken from eight different series produced between 1983 and 2013. Burtynsky's photographs capture surreal landscapes which investigate the global use of natural resources such as water, oil and marble. Burtynsky's debut film WATERMARK was recently awarded the 2014 Best Canadian Documentary Film prize, and he was awarded the Order of Canada in 2006. VAG director Kathleen Bartels stated "We would like to express our gratitude to Edward Burtynsky for this significant body of work", a gift which will greatly improve the gallery's collection of photography by contemporary artists. Burtysnky's work will be exhibited 1st March - 26th May at the institution.
