'Ash to Art' Auction in aid of Glasgow School of Art

25 leading international artists have been commissioned to create new work using materials recovered from The Glasgow School of Art fire in 2014. The works will be auctioned at Christie’s, London on Wednesday 8th March with the aim of raising the final £13.5million required to complete the restoration of the School's Mackintosh Library.

The participating artists have been chosen by J. Walter Thompson London, and include seven Turner Prize winners. The collection reflects the international importance and influence of the Mackintosh Building on those who studied there and further afield, featuring works by Anish Kapoor, Tacita Dean, Conrad Shawcross, The Chapman Brothers, Sir Peter Blake and Ishbel Myerscough.

Each artist was sent a piece of debris specifically chosen for them with a note explaining what it was, where it was from and the concept. The brief was left open for each artist to interpret what they received and create their own new piece of art from a range of remains including charred timbers, books and furniture.

Ishbel Myerscough was interviewed by BBC Front Row on Friday 4th March to discuss the fundraising initiative and her time studying at Glasgow School of Art.
