Carol Robertson featured in This Is Me
Royal West of England Academy, Bristol
2 May - 19 June 2022
Running concurrently with Me Myself and I, a portraiture exhibition in the main gallery, this display profiles individual works by RWA Academicians that they consider to be seminal or defining works in their careers.
Robertson will exhibit Time and Tide (1998), a work that she created following a period of time spent in Rome after being awarded the Edwin Austin Memorial Award. Robertson explains: "It defines both my sense of self and my practice. I realised I could load multiple layers of meaning into this simple sculptural form… everything finally comes together here. The circle is transparent, liquid-like, glazed with many highly polished layers of oil, in sharp contrast to its thick matte wax and oil ground. The circle alludes to architectural form and space yet becomes a symbol for many other things I wanted to express: to an emotional safe haven, to a cycle of time, to consummation, and in this instance, to water, tide and to a marine harbour. It’s a blueprint for understanding that geometry can express human stories."
