This striking recent work is by British artist and 2021 Ruth Borchard self-portrait prize-winner Lucy Jones, known for her revealing and defiant portrayals of her own body as she addresses ideas of femininity, fragility, aging and disability. Jones, who was born with cerebral palsy, has faced the frustrations of her disability over-crowding people's perceptions of her by using her defiant ferocity, vulnerability and wry sense of humor, turning the attention back onto the viewer. Here she inverts the canvas to give the impression she has just lost her balance, as text next to her reads: ‘falling into the darkness.’
Lucy Jones studied at Camberwell School of Art, followed by the Royal College of Art, where she won a Rome scholarship in 1982. Born in London, she now lives in Ludlow, Shropshire. Her work is featured in international public collections including the Arts Council Collection, UK and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
